Night Shift

Rotterdam never quite switches off. Somewhere a bus is idling at Zuidplein, a baker is folding dough she will never see sold, and a warehouse full of servers is humming a note nobody hears.

For this issue we stayed up. Our writers spent a summer of nights with the people who work them, and came back with stories about tiredness, solidarity and the strange intimacy of an empty tram. — Ines Vallejo
