This issue started with a toaster. Not a beautiful one — a 1978 chrome thing that a retired engineer at our local repair café refused to give up on for four Saturdays in a row.
We wanted to understand that refusal. Across fourteen stories we visit watchmakers, sock-darners, bicycle mechanics and one very organised man with a van, and we ask what it costs to keep something going instead of starting again.
Repair turns out to be less about objects than about time: who has it, who is paid for it, and who is allowed to open the case. — Ines Vallejo
